Shopping in Monmouth: Closure of Monnow Street
As the shops open from 22nd June, there are changes happening in town. Pedestrian areas are being enlarged, around the bus station and around Agincourt Square. These are described more fully on the County Council’s web site here.
Basically, Monnow Street is currently closed from just after the bus station to Priory Street, while work is being done around Shire Hall. St John St is also closed. This is likely to last 6 weeks. You can still drive to the bus station from the south, and turn around there.
A 20mph zone will be introduced with speed reduction measures at entrance points covering the whole of Monmouth and Wyesham except the A40, A466, and A4136.
Request and Collect Library Books
If you have read all the books in your house during lockdown you will be pleased to hear that from 23 June, Monmouthshire library service are starting an ‘order and collect’ book lending service.
You can browse an online catalogue and identify the type of book you want. Although you can’t order a specific title, as they can’t guarantee it will be available, you can name titles and authors you are interested in and the staff will do their best to meet your requirements. You can have up to 5 books and you will be given a date and time to collect then from Monmouth. The details are here
UPDATE 9th May: With the relaxation on restrictions by the Welsh Government, Garden Centres are now open.
Millbrook Garden Centre at Mitchel Troy is open, but limiting the number of people in the shop at any one time. It is currently very busy.
The Willows Garden Centre in Usk is taking telephone orders for delivery. Call 10am to 4pm (not Sundays), £25 minimum order. 01291 672669 (this item dates from April – not known if it still applies now garden centres are open)
UPDATE: Handyman House is now open but still offering the order and delivery service.
Handyman House in Monmouth is offering free delivery to The Narth for a minimum order value of £40. Lower value orders can be collected from the shop.
Ordering must be done by email to firstname.lastname@example.org stating your phone number. They will phone back to confirm the order and take payment before either delivery or collection from the shop. (Please bear with them, as it may take time to contact everyone and arrange delivery.) Please do not phone as it would be unfair to take a call in front of others that have emailed – each order will be answered in turn.

Car Park and Playground Closures
UPDATE 16th June: NRW are gradually opening facilities. Manor Wood car parks are now open, but it is stressed these are for local use and travel should be limited in line with Welsh Government requirements. Details on the NRW web site
UPDATE 8th April: The Glade play equipment and picnic tables have been cordoned off as groups have been congregating there – we assume from outside the village as they came by car. Please keep away from benches, play equipment and other furniture as it can be a source of contamination.
Natural Resources Wales closed all of its visitor centres, car parks, play areas and toilets on reserves, woods and forests they manage . This includes those in and around Trellech. NRW advises: “We need to avoid unnecessary travel, so make your walk a local one; do not get into your car to travel to one of the woods we manage. The walking trails in the woodlands remain open but you must exercise alone or with your own household and, if encountering other people, maintain the social distancing rule”
